Igloo Letterpress Supports Design Education
You may have noticed a few Twitter and Facebook posts about the Mohawk Paper Design Ignites Change project. Igloo was happy to take part in this fundraising project to raise grant money to support design education.
Here is a little more info about the project:
Feedback Loop: Notebook Project
100% of the purchase price of these notebooks will directly support Design Ignites Change which gives youth in underserved communities a real-world experience using design thinking to communicate their ideas, exhibit their potential and take action in their own lives. « Mohawk Papers is excited to work with Design Ignites Change and their youth mentoring initiative School: by Design which asks high school students – in collaboration with their college or professional design mentors – to “redesign your school.” If you would like to organize an easy-to-implement School: by Design mentoring program for a high school in your community visit the Design Ignites Change website: http://www.designigniteschange.org
Those teen years are so important to continue developing critical thinking skills. Heck – we all need encouragement to find our voice and share what we are thinking about with others. So, take a moment to pick up these great notebooks – just $15 each!!
Igloo’s notebooks feature Jeremy Slagle’s tangled cycle pattern letterpress printed in pewter ink on a light grey paper. Blank white text pages are hand-sewn using yellow thread with an exposed stitch.
Gearing Up For Fall!
It is hard to believe, but the little Chapmans are heading back to daycare and school this week. Although I have loved the extra time with them over the Summer, I am so ready for a regular schedule in the studio! I am sure that there are other parents who can relate to the anticipation I feel. New projects, new school supplies and new routines.
One of our family goals has been to reduce the use of our car over the last year. My husband often bikes to work and I made it through most of last Winter with a kindergartener on a trail-behind bike. We are glad that Adam is older and more excited about joining us. He really hated being in the trailer and his old daycare was just a little too far to bike.
So, after Adam’s nap we loaded the bike rack and headed to Highbanks Park to practice riding on “mama’s bike”. Success!
We have taken our Xtracycle FreeRadical kit off John’s bike so that I can ride with both kids around town. I will also be practicing carrying cases of paper back from the store. woo hoo!
Here is a link to the Xtracycle site (http://www.xtracycle.com) we have been super happy with the kit on both of our bikes. And of course, thanks to John for taking apart his bike and sharing it with us.
A few type cases and cabinets for sale
Last week we acquired a super fantastic amazing collection of wood type. That means that other type has to leave. We also have a lot of empty type cases and 2 type cabinets for sale.
The type is mostly pied (jumbled) so buyer beware. You have a fair amount of sorting in your future. Mostly California Job Cases with a few 3/4 Cases thrown in for good measure.
Also for sale, a standing height industrial desk, 3 chairs and a 10 foot wood shelf (two 5 ft sections that have biscuit joinery).
So, give me a call or stop by and make an offer. Show me a picture of your type in coffee cans and I’ll cut you a deal.

New press, Father’s Day gifts and projects
If you follow Igloo on Twitter (@iglooletterpres) you already know that today was an exciting day. Our new press arrived and it is big!
I am not going to post any pictures here now . . . I hope that you will stop by on Saturday and see it in person. What better way to celebrate Father’s Day than to visit Igloo and check out cool old printing presses. Igloo is now home to presses dating from the 1890s, 1920s, 1940s, and 1970s.
You can try your hand at setting type and running the Vandercook press or printing with photopolymer plates on the Pilot press on Saturday to create your own notepad with letterpress cover. This is a pretty spiffy gift for just $5! Make one for Dad and for yourself!
In addition to the notepads you will find a great selection of hand-sewn books, and letterpress cards and posters. I am excited to announce that Igloo is also selling maps by collaborators These Are Things. The original world map in aqua and the Columbus neighborhoods map are both in stock.
And of course, you can even pick up a Father’s Day card to go with your gift. We have two great cards by local designers
These Are Things and Paper Remnants
printed by hand at Igloo.
Saturday, June 19, 10-4
Notepad with letterpress cover (same design)
1 for $5, 2 for $8, 3 for $12.
Impressive Father’s Day Gifts
Stop into Igloo Letterpress today for an impressive Father’s Day gift! Check out the pre-made selection of maps, journals and cards from Columbus area designers.
For today’s Market Day activity I am bringing out a selection of letterpress images I inherited from my grandad. Create and print your own unique stationery designs today 10-4.
Make it at the Market!
Each Saturday in Worthington features a fantastic fantastic farmer’s market. Shoppers can now add a stop into Igloo Letterpress to create their own unique book and stationery projects. From 10-noon tomorrow we will be making softcover books just the right size to carry with you.
Also, don’t forget to pick up a card to celebrate recent grads and Summer weddings. Here are pics of our Father’s Day cards.
8th grade “shadowing day”
Earlier in the spring we were lucky enough to host Shea for her 8th grade shadowing day. In true Igloo fashion, we put her to work right away, pulling a few prints on the Vandercook. Shea also helped make the Igloo mobile for our booth at the National Stationery Show. Here is a photo of the adorable plant that her family dropped off today and her handiwork (via Oh So Beautiful Paper). Thank you so much!!
Someone knew my Grandad!
Wow! John Barrett of Letterpress Things just stopped by our stationery show booth. AND he knew my grandad back in the 1980′s through the Amalgamated Printer’s Association. So cool! He was glad to see that I was still using my grandad’s presses.
I would encourage you to go to John if you are looking for equipment. What a nice man!
NSS Day 3
It is unreal to see how quickly this trip is flying by. We have 1.5 days left of the show. I have been so happy to meet other letterpress printers and connect with old friends. Another big treat has been meeting folks that I only know from Twitter. It is so great to put a real face to an avatar. These are fun folks!
This has been an amazing learning experience. There is a rhythym to the show of people collecting catalogs and stopping by the next day to place orders.
Ok, we are off to another continental breakfast. Then, hopefully, more sales!
